The Gwanda Civil Protection Department (CPD) has staged a mock road accident to gauge the state of preparedness of the local emergency response services ahead of the festive season.

With fake blood, wounds, screams and a vehicle up in flames and four simulated fatalities, one would believe that it is a real accident.

The simulated traffic crash that was staged 10 kilometres before Gwanda town involved a school bus and a Datsun 120y.

The Gwanda District Civil Protection Unit committee conducted the drill to assess the response of emergency services personnel.

The emergency services took between nine and 50 minutes to attend to the mock accident scene and it was noted more training is needed to improve responsiveness.

The exercise that was funded by the International Federation of the Red Cross saw ambulance and fire services, traffic police, Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services and the Zimbabwe Red Cross participating in the exercise.

According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, road carnage has become the leading cause of death in the country.
