A 25-YEAR-OLD woman from Bulilima District hanged herself in her bedroom hut allegedly after discovering her husband was having an affair with a neighbour.

Siphethokuhle Vundla, the wife of the councillor for Gala area, Sifanekiso Ndlovu, 46, allegedly took her own life while her husband had gone to attend a workshop in Plumtree Town.

Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Thabani Mkhwananzi, confirmed the incident which happened last Tuesday at Ntoli Village in Masendu.

He said investigations to ascertain the cause of the suicide were still underway as the woman did not leave a suicide note.

A police source stationed in Plumtree, however, said preliminary investigations had indicated that Vundla was upset as her husband was having an extra-marital affair with a neighbour.

He said close relatives and neighbours had indicated that the woman was constantly arguing with her husband over the alleged affair.

Vundla's husband, Ndlovu, however, said he was unaware of what had driven his wife to commit suicide.

He said he was summoned back to his homestead on Tuesday afternoon after receiving news that Vundla had committed suicide.

"I'd travelled to Plumtree to attend a week-long workshop when I received the shocking news. When I left my homestead everything appeared normal and my wife didn't mention any problem to me. I was shocked to hear that she had committed suicide. I'm not sure why she decided to end her life in such a terrible manner.

"We had just got married and I wonder what went wrong,'' said Ndlovu.

He said they had tried to search around the house for a suicide note but they could not find any.

He said his wife was laid to rest last Wednesday at her parents' homestead.

Chief Masendu said the cause of the suicide was still unclear.

He said Vundla is reported to have summoned her sister to her homestead who then found her hanging from the roof of her bedroom hut.

"I received a report that the wife of a councillor in my area committed suicide. I'm yet to get the full circumstances and the reason behind the incident but it appears that the woman summoned her sister to her homestead.

"He sister delayed and when she finally arrived she found her already dead in her bedroom hut. She alerted neighbours," he said.

Chief Masendu described the incident as a tragedy to the community.

He advised community members to resolve problems amicably.
