A MAN who found underwear laced with black powder stashed under his matrimonial bed strangled his wife until she collapsed as he barked accusations of witchcraft.

Vusa Moyo (41) of Jibajiba in Lupane always suspected his wife engaged in witchcraft.

On the fateful day, on 1 October, he came home at around 5pm looking for his missing wrist watch, instead he "ploughed" into wet underwear laced with an unknown black powder.

That did not go down well with him. He then accused his wife, Sithobekile Moyo (34) of bewitching him.

An argument ensued and when it got to a head he reached for a sjambok and struck his wife several times all over the body. As if that was not enough he sent her packing.

But the wife decided to report the matter to the police for physical and sexual abuse.

She laid bare her soul at Lupane civil court before presiding magistrate Ndumo Masuku.

"I am the applicant in this matter, my husband usually beats me up and if he misses any of his clothes he starts to accuse me of bewitching him. He says I cast a bad spell on him that is why he always loses jobs. I believe he has a small house and is abusing me so that I leave. I also believe he is the one who smeared the underwear with  muthi to fix me."

Vusa kept to his accusations adding that he was tired of losing underneath clothing in unclear circumstances.

"It is shocking your worship because I have been missing numerous underwear under unclear circumstances. As a result I have developed erectile problems. Now my bedroom life has become a disaster. I am now a useless person," he said.

He added that at some point his wife confirmed to him that she was behind the underwear disappearances.

"When I asked her, she admitted saying she smeared the underwear with muthi so that I won't propose love to anyone. But now that has affected my sex life. I am afraid she will end up poisoning me. So I have decided that she must go back to her parents."

Masuku granted Sithobekile an interim order and ordered Vusa not to physically and emotionally abuse his wife and told them to go for counselling and come back on 23 October.
