Gwanda municipality has embarked on a $400 000 road rehabilitation programme that will also see the installation of traffic lights in the Matabeleland South provincial capital.
Through its allocation from ZINARA, the Gwanda Town Council is targeting to rehabilitate 10 kilometres of its road network covering the central business district and the Big Burn road.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has also assisted the local authority with material to reseal the roads that are in a poor state.
The increase in the volume of traffic in the provincial capital has also necessitated the installation of two sets of traffic lights along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo highway, says Gwanda town mayor Knowledge Ndlovu.
Commenting on the development, Gwanda Central legislator Edson Gumbo urged the local authority to continue putting funds to good use in order to improve service delivery in the town.
For a long time the roads in Gwanda town have been in a state of disrepair as the local authority was failing to maintain them.
