A LOWER Sixth pupil at Vurasha High School in Mberengwa allegedly struck a Form Two pupil with a brick during a fight over a cap and the victim died two days later at United Bulawayo Hospitals.

Duncan Dube, 21, of Mabhin'a Village allegedly struck Dennis Mapako, 15, of Bindu Village under Chief Nyamondo on the forehead after missing his intended target, Emmanuel Sozinyu, 18, of the same village. Sozinyu was part of a gang allegedly hired by Mapako to retrieve his cap from Dube.

Ward 23 Councillor Innocent Mashanda confirmed the incident which he said occurred on Wednesday last week at around 5PM. "I can confirm receiving the report of murder involving a Vurasha High School pupil. His body is at United Bulawayo Hospitals' mortuary awaiting post-mortem after the boy died on Friday upon admission," said Clr Mashanda.

According to a reliable source at the school, Dennis and Duncan, who is a Lower Sixth pupil, exchanged harsh words over a cap and Dennis teamed up with about 10 colleagues, intending to attack Duncan.

"Just after pupils had been dismissed by the teacher in charge, Tears Gumbo, they left for home. About 800 m away from the school Dennis, Sozinyu and his other colleagues teamed up and confronted Duncan over Dennis' cap that he had taken the previous day," said Collen Mayowa, a villager.

Moyo said Dennis advanced towards Duncan and demanded his sandals as surety that he would return the cap.

Duncan, said Moyo, overpowered Dennis and picked up a brick. "Duncan had seen Emmanuel rushing towards him. He threw the brick targeting Emmanuel but his target ducked and he hit Dennis on the forehead," said Moyo

He said Dennis sustained a deep cut on the forehead.

"He collapsed leading to fellow pupils fleeing the scene leaving a few who gathered the courage to report the matter to the headmaster Vhiyayi Maphosa, who teamed up with villagers and rushed Dennis to Vurasha Clinic," said Moyo.

Moyo said Dennis' situation deteriorated and he was transferred to Musume Mission Hospital and later referred to Munene District Hospital from where he was finally rushed to UBH. The Vurasha High School Development Committee (SDC) chairperson Livious Chikwere said parents and school authorities were seized with the matter.

He said Duncan had been arrested and was assisting police with investigations.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi could not be reached for comment.
