As some numerous prospective drivers last week in Bulawayo and Harare expressed concerns over Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) officials demanding bribes from them so that they pass road tests and even oral examinations, a Hwange resident has revealed shocking figures of the money demanded by the instructors at the resort town's station.

The resident who claimed to be one of the victims of the illicit deals by VID officials; who did no disclose his names said the issue that VID officials demand bribes to make their victims pass driving test is very true.

"We have seen it happening here in Hwange. One bribes to get a learners license. The amount ranges from $40 - $60. For the driver's license class 3; one pays $120 - $150 and for class 2 it ranges between $250 - $300," he said.

"Imagine that is on top of the driving lesson fares. That people fail because they come ill-prepared is a lie. These VID officers are so corrupt!"

He said something must be done to stop the rot.

"Our rights are being taken for granted. How can one be bribed for doing the job he or she has been hired to do? And why do they purposely fail people in order to force them to pay bribes? Its just not fair," he said.

Media reports states that cases of VID, police and Zimra officials demanding bribes from members of the public on various conditions were currently rampant.

There have also been numerous arrests of some public officials this year on allegations of extortion and bribery and many cases are pending in the courts.
