At least 10 schools in Bulilima District are counting their losses after a hailstorm destroyed infrastructure and furniture worth thousands of dollars, leaving hundreds of students stranded.

The worst affected is Tokwana Primary School where 320 of the 600 pupils no longer have classrooms.

At least US$24 000 is required to repair the damaged infrastructure, according to school head, Mr Themba Moyo.

Chief Masendu of Bulilima appealed to the business community and well wishers to also assist villagers who were also affected by the destructive rains.

Government officials, who visited the schools, pledged to mobilise resources to assist the affected schools and communities.

Last year, 26 schools in Matabeleland South province were affected by hail storms.
