AN HIV positive Gweru woman who forced a mentally challenged man to be intimate with her has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Unet Khumalo, 41, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated indecent assault when she appeared before regional magistrate Collet Ncube. In passing sentence, Ncube said Khumalo deserved to be punished as she had exposed an innocent man to HIV.

"What you did is horrible and you exposed an innocent man to HIV. You knew what you were doing and for that you deserve to be punished," said the magistrate. He said he took into account that Khumalo was a first offender who did not waste the court's time as she pleaded guilty.

"You're sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Two years are suspended for five years on condition you don't commit a similar offence," said Ncube. Prosecuting, Emmanuel Matosi told the court that in October last year, Khumalo called the 30-year-old man into her room and ordered him to fondle her breasts.

"Khumalo, who was a domestic worker at the complainant's home, then undressed him and asked him to engage in sex with her," said Matosi. He said Khumalo had sex three times with the man, without protection.

Matosi told the court that the matter came to light when the man told his aunt what had happened. The matter was reported to the police leading to Khumalo's arrest. The man was tested for HIV and the results came out negative.
