Beitbridge council allocates residential stands

Rural District council has allocated residential stands to 160 people as the local authority moves to ease accommodation challenges.
The council's acting chief executive officer, Peter Ncube, recently said the stands were located at Lutumba business centre, about 20km along the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway.
He said the local authority had already serviced the area with roads and water.
"We started allocating the medium density stands in October. They each cost $2,000 and we are happy with the uptake. These were allocated to people on our housing waiting list," said Ncube.
"We serviced the stands at a low cost since they will be using septic tanks and water from two boreholes we drilled in the area."
He said council had completed laying water pipes and had identified a possible dumpsite.
Ncube said the allocation of the stands was done in line with the government's housing for all scheme.
He said the Beitbridge RDC was expecting the area to be a hive of activity by early next year.
Accommodation shortages have increasingly become a nightmare in Beitbridge town where some of the residents are shuttling from Lutumba growth point to the town.
The town has a population of 42,218 and 11,959 households.
However, the number is increasing daily due to economic activity and proximity to South Africa.
Ncube said the local authority would continue servicing more stands in Lutumba.
