Hunger is stalking rural communities in Beitbridge with vulnerable groups being hit the hardest.

Calls are growing for the government to start giving assistance to the affected people.

Beitbridge has been severely affected by drought as the area did not receive adequate rains last season.

Most vulnerable households in Beitbridge were expecting a bleak Christmas but the political leadership in the area has come to their rescue through a donation of various food staffs.

"Investing in irrigation schemes is a long term solution to the perennial food shortages affecting the district but there is an urgent need for the government consider giving food aid," noted Beitbridge West legislator, Matrine Mudau.

The donation to vulnerable families comprised 23 tonnes of maize, 16 tonnes of rice food hampers and second hand clothes.
