POLICE have arrested a 39-year-old truck driver employed by a South African company for smuggling 583kgs of scrap copper worth $11,686 through Beitbridge border post.
Nkululeko Msimanga of Nkulumane 12 in Bulawayo was arrested on Wednesday morning enroute to Johannesburg, South Africa.
The contraband which had been loaded in Granitesite in Harare was found hidden in a false compartment between the chassis and the body of the truck.
Msimanga appeared in court yesterday charged with illegal possession of copper.
He pleaded guilty and was fined $400 by Beitbridge magistrate Innocent Bepura.
The copper was forfeited to state.
Allegations are that the accused arrived at Beitbridge border post driving a South African registered Hino truck which is owned by Dumeya investments.
He went through all the immigration and customs formalities without declaring the copper.
Msimanga then drove the truck to the Zimra check point intending to leave for South Africa.
