A MAN from Bulilima is on the run after he allegedly beat up his 64-year-old uncle to death for restraining him from fighting during a drinking spree.

Studymore Ndebele, 27, of Bezu Village in Natane Ward, allegedly struck Aleck Moyo, who is also from the same area, with a concrete block on the head on Thursday last week.

The old man fell unconscious and was rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals where he died on admission.

Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Nkosilathi Mkhwananzi confirmed the incident and said police had launched a manhunt for Ndebele.

"We're investigating a murder case which occurred in Bezu area in Bulilima and our suspect is Studymore Ndebele. He's on the run and the police are searching for him so that he can assist us in the investigations.

"Anyone with relevant information can submit it at a police station nearest to them," said Sgt Mkhwananzi.

He said Ndebele struck Moyo with a concrete brick after he restrained him from fighting with a neighbour, Faiton Moyo.

"Ndebele and his uncle were drinking beer at Bezu Business Centre around 7PM. Moyo had a misunderstanding with a community member who was also drinking at the same bottle store.

"They proceeded out of the bottle store where they started fighting. Ndebele's uncle intervened and pulled his nephew away from the scene," he said.

Sgt Mkhwananzi said Ndebele was angered by the intervention and struck his uncle on the left side of the head with a concrete block.

He said Moyo fell down unconscious while his nephew fled from the scene.

Sgt Mkhwananzi said Moyo was rushed to Bezu Clinic where he was referred to the UBH where he died on admission.

A Bezu village head, Enock Dube, said Ndebele was last seen in the village on the day he committed the offence.

He said Ndebele went to his homestead after the altercation, took some clothes and left without any explanation.

"Villagers are also on the alert for this culprit because people feel that he's a now a danger to society.

Drinking holes have become a common site for criminal activities and it's unfortunate that some encounters turn out fatal," Dube said.
