High temperatures experienced over the past weekend have broken previous records, making 2016 the hottest year since 1992.

The high temperatures also surpassed records set in 1987 and 1983.

West Nicholson recorded the highest temperature of 43 degrees, breaking a previous high of 42.4 degrees recorded in 1992, while Lupane recorded a high of 41 degrees up from 37  degrees in 1982.

Senior Meteorologist, Tich Zinyemba said there is a close relation between the high temperatures and scattered thunderstorms experienced in parts of the country.

The excessive heat and erratic rainfall being experienced in the country are due to the El Nino, which is the worst over the last 18 years.
