HYENAS are terrorising Gwanda South villagers by invading their homesteads killing livestock as they become more desperate for food due to the drought.

Villagers who are already reeling from the effects of the El Nino induced drought that has killed a number of their livestock are reportedly having sleepless nights due to raids by hyenas almost on a daily basis.

The most affected villages are those in Ward 24 which is surrounded by conservancies.

The hyenas are suspected to be feeling the pinch of the debilitating drought and are straying into homesteads in search of food.

Cattle, goats and donkeys are mainly targeted.

Some people are afraid that as the hyenas become more desperate for food they may end up targeting them.

Ward 14 councillor, Alphios Tlou, yesterday said they had reported the matter to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) for help in dealing with the hyenas.

"The raids are a daily thing as they are invading kraals. If you go to the community you will hear the outcry," said Cllr Tlou.

Gwanda Rural District Council chief executive officer, Ronnie Sibanda, said normally if they receive such reports they report to Zimparks and provide transport if it is needed.
