A WOMAN has dragged her husband, who is an immigration officer stationed at Victoria Falls Border Post, to court accusing him of abusing her by refusing to let her get a job.
Callista Machona, 29, has a standing protection order against her husband, Hugh Machona, 32, which was granted at the Harare magistrate's court in June 2011.
The order bars Machona from abusing his wife physically, emotionally and psychologically, or stalking her.
Hugh appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Rangarirai Gakanje yesterday charged with contempt of court after violating the order by shouting at his wife.
Callista, the court heard, had been invited for a job interview at Dete and Machona didn't want her to attend. She told the court: "On February 17, 2016, we were at home when I received a call from my father about a job interview. Hugh got angry and started shouting.
He ordered me to leave his house saying I wouldn't go to work as long as I stayed in his house."
Callista said she fled from home when her husband dared her saying: "ndoda kuzviona" (I want to see).
Hugh pleaded not guilty and claimed he never spoke to Callista about the job interview.
The court invited the couple's maid Isabel Sibanda who testified that Machona shouted at his wife.
Machona told the court his wife had a score to settle with him because they are in the process of divorcing.
They got married legally in September 2009.
At the moment they are staying together.
"She wanted to go to Dete for an interview and I told her father that I wasn't against her going there but they had to make their own arrangements. Her father had promised to come and pick her up," Hugh said.
He alleged his wife wanted him fired from work.
"She went to my manager at work and asked to have me fired for denying her an opportunity to go for an interview. My manager advised her to go to the police. All she wants is to settle a score with me.
"I wouldn't have ordered her to pack her belongings and leave my house as she claims because we have three minor children that she is taking care of," said Machona.
Prosecuting, Takunda Ndovorwi said Hugh abused his wife psychologically through shouting, thereby violating the protection order granted against him.
The trial continues on April 5.
