BULAWAYO businessman Robert Vera has died. He was 65.

Vera, the owner of Luveve Service Station and proprietor of Twin Solutions and mobile toilets supplier in Bulawayo, collapsed and died on Sunday, his family said yesterday.

"He collapsed on Sunday morning after attending a wedding in Vumba. He had a heart problem that was manageable but seemed to be in good health.

"We really don't know what happened. We called an ambulance to rush him to hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival," his sister Susan said. Vera was born in Bulawayo in a family of five, being the only son among daughters — Irene, Cynthia, Mercia and Susan.

He ventured into business during the colonial era, a time when black people were restrained from owning large businesses. Luveve Service Station situated at KoChigumira business centre was established by Vera's father in 1967.

Vera was also an avid soccer and golf enthusiast and was involved in nurturing young talent from grassroots level. He worked alongside the likes of Omega Sibanda, Rahman Gumbo and Amini Soma-Phiri in supporting grassroots soccer.

His daughter Sydnora said her father's death had robbed the family of its icon. "My dad was a great man who was kind and will be sorely missed by his family. He was a philanthropist who supported up-and-coming stars in football by paying their school fees and giving them food," she said.

Vera is survived by wife Margaret, a number of children and grandchildren. Mourners are gathered at Number 9 Broadbills Road, Burnside.
