The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA) has released US$160 000 for the upgrading of state and council roads in Nkayi.
The money was released following a visit by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Dr Joram Gumbo recently to assess the state of the roads in the district.
Nkayi roads have been in a sorry state for a long time posing challenges for the travelling public as the greater part of the road network had become inaccessible.
It is worse with the narrow bridges at Shangani and Gweru rivers which have both claimed lives of scores of people including a council chairperson.
The wreckage of the accidents can still be seen, an indication that urgent attention is required to ensure that the bridges are safe for travellers.
Nkayi North member of the National Assembly Cde Sithembiso Nyoni admits, both state and council roads have been neglected for a long time, a situation which has made it difficult to attract new investors and transport maize for drought relief to the remote parts of the district.
ZINARA has also employed scores of youths from the district to who will be responsible for road clearance and other general duties during the rehabilitation exercise which is expected to make the entire district more accessible.
