The government says Victoria Falls International Airport will be ready for commissioning by the end of July this year.

This was revealed after a tour of the airport by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Dr Joram Gumbo who was assessing the progress in the refurbishment of the domestic terminal and some sections which have been under construction.

The project is nearing completion with the new international terminal, runway, taxi way, aero bridges, control tower and instrument landing systems already operational.

Work is underway to complete the new fire station, car park as well as the domestic terminal.

Dr Gumbo is optimistic that the current negotiations with foreign airlines aimed at attracting them into the country will succeed considering that the airport meets international standards.

Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development Dexter Nduna says the new facilities will make it easier for the airport to be upgraded to category 9 from the current category 8.

The airport which is being expanded through a $150 million facility from China Exim Bank has created employment for locals with the tourism sector expected to reap more benefits from the new state-of-the-art facilities.
