Over sixty officials from law enforcement agencies and financial intelligence have met in Zambia last week in a workshop to discuss effective ways of collaborating to strengthen their respective capacities in dealing with money laundering.
Africa has been seriously affected by money laundering amid moves by the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) members states to meet and discuss over the criminal acts.
Comesa said it has observed that financial crime investigation and asset forfeiting are the weakest link in the fight against money laundering.
To this effect, Comesa has convened a four-day workshop from May 16 to 19 for over 60 participants mainly from law enforcement agencies to implement and strengthen the region's capacity to fight money laundering.
Comesa secretary general Sindiso Ngwenya said if not adequately addressed, the vice has the potential to discourage stakeholders from developing a comprehensive programme to cover all critical aspects of maritime insecurity.
