RECENT police actions in Victoria Falls during an MDC T rally are a reminder of the dark days of Gukurahundi massacres, a senior politician said.
Speaking at the induction of the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee (Jomic) provincial liaison committees Sengezo Tshabangu said the threat by police details to shot his party's supporters reminded him and others of the Gukurahundi era.
He said, "When we saw that gun, we were reminded of the Gukurahundi times.
"If a person threatens to shot an unarmed person, then we are reminded of the time when Gukurahundi killed more than 20 000 innocent people.
"The people of Matabeleland are tired of violence. I speak on behalf of the people of this region, we have lost lives and p[property and police must stop their conduct," he said.
Tshabangu is the chairman of the Movement for Democratic Change formation led by Prime Minister Mr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai.
He mourned the fact that little, if any, has been restored in terms of infrastructure that was destroyed during the Gukurahundi ethnic cleansing killings.
"We are failing to repair what was destroyed during Gukurahundi and at the same we have police officers threatening to shoot unarmed civilians. This is not good for a nation that is undergoing national healing," he said.
Police stopped MDC T's rallies in Victoria Falls. In anti-riot gear, the invaded the small tourist resort town threatened unarmed residents, blocked roads and conducted military style searches.
The MDC T has since indicated that it is reporting the matter to the Sadc Global Political Agreement mediators for resolution.
It has also accused Zanu PF of acting in bad faith and of being behind the disturbances that marred its rallies. Zanu PF had denied any wrong doing and has indicated that it wants the shaky inclusive Government to end.
