A MAN from Bulilima severely assaulted his wife with a knobkerrie after he arrived home around 11PM and found the door locked.
Danisa Ncube, 39, of Sinotsi area, arrived home from a drinking spree and confronted his wife on why she had locked the door before his arrival. Ncube was convicted on his own plea of guilty to physical abuse by Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa.
He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment of which three months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not within the period commit an offence of the same nature.
The remaining six months were suspended on condition that he performs 210 hours of community service at Sinotsi Primary School. In mitigation, Ncube begged the court to give him a lenient sentence that would allow him to nurse his wife's injuries.
"I had a misunderstanding with my wife but I didn't mean to assault her. Could you pardon me so that I can go and be with her at home and nurse her through her injuries," he said. Prosecuting, Jane Phiri said Ncube assaulted his wife Petty Nyathi on June 1.
"Ncube arrived home drunk around 11PM while Nyathi was asleep in her bedroom hut. He knocked on the door and she opened for him. Ncube started questioning his wife on why she had locked the door when she knew that he was still out but she remained quiet.
"Nyathi later received a message on her phone while her husband was still questioning her. Ncube accused his wife of communicating with her boyfriend. Nyathi went on to show Ncube the message in order to prove that it wasn't from a lover," said Phiri.
She said Ncube went on to question his wife on why he had found the door locked but she remained quiet. Phiri said Ncube retrieved a knobkerrie and started beating his wife all over the body. She said Nyathi fled from the homestead and sought refuge at a neighbour's house. She reported the matter to the police resulting in her husband's arrest. Nyathi sustained injuries as a result of the assault.
