A MAN from Mangwe has decided to end his marriage of 45 years, saying he no longer loves his wife.

Mr Adolph Mpofu (66) of Maninji area dragged his 63-year-old wife, Mrs Pauline Mpofu, to court in a bid to end their union that resulted in seven children, the eldest being 44-years-old.

Mr Mpofu told the court that he last had sex with his wife in 1997 and the two were customarily married in 1971.

He said divorce would enable him to have peace of mind which he had not experienced for the past 45 years.

"I want to divorce my wife because I don't love her anymore. We've been married for all this long but we haven't had sex for the past 19 years.

"She hasn't been treating me well even during times when I was ill. The divorce will give me an opportunity to have peace of mind as I've been unhappy for a long time in this marriage," said Mr Mpofu.

He said they would equally share the property acquired over the years. In response, Mrs Mpofu begged her husband to reconsider his decision as she still loved him.

She told her husband that the divorce would be an embarrassment to their family and children.

"I don't consent to the divorce as I still love you. How can we divorce now when we're as old as we are? I'm sure that we can solve our dispute and continue with our life and things can go back to normal.

"If we divorce we will just embarrass the children and bring shame upon ourselves. You have poor eyesight and you're constantly ill. You need me by your side so that I care of you," said Mrs Mpofu.

She said her husband deserted her in 1991 when he went to seek employment in Botswana. While there, he fell in love with another woman. She said she patiently waited for her husband at their rural home in Mangwe District but he neglected her.

Plumtree magistrate, Mr Livard Philemon, who presided over the matter, advised the couple to submit their marriage certificate as well as a memorandum of understanding on how they would share the property.

He remanded the matter to Monday for ruling.
