AN HIV positive Grade Seven pupil from Nkulumane suburb in Bulawayo allegedly raped his eight-year-old cousin five times at knife point. Some residents of the suburb are allegedly baying for the boy's blood as it has emerged that he also allegedly sexually abused other children in the neighbourhood. The HIV positive boy, who cannot be named for ethical reasons, allegedly raped his cousin from last year and was caught in July this year.
Prosecutors have since recommended that he be taken for a psychiatric examination before his rape trial commences at the regional court. The boy, who stays at the same house with the girl, allegedly approached her armed with a knife while her mother and grandmother were away.
"He was armed with a knife and threatened to kill his cousin if she made any noise or resisted. The boy undressed his cousin and raped her once after threatening to stab her if she told anyone," reads the State outline.
"He also used the same modus operandi and raped the girl four more times. The girl did not report the abuse as she was scared that he was going to stab her." The matter came to light on July 19 when the girl's mother noticed that she was limping.
"She asked the girl and she said someone had attacked her. The girl's mother asked her neighbour to help her in solving the issue and the girl opened up. She told the woman that her cousin had raped her five times using a knife to scare her," read the State outline.
The girl's mother made a police report and the boy was arrested. About 325 girls are raped in the country every month, according to police statistics. National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba has said about 11 minors are raped in the country every day.
"At least 325 cases of juvenile rape are recorded every month. Meaning we're having 81 plus rape cases on a weekly basis. These are very scary figures and we've noted that most of the minors being raped are between the ages of 11 and 15," she said.
