Gosprenuers slammed

The church has come under scrutiny for putting up the face of prosperity at the expense of poverty of millions.

A local pastor has defied the odds by taking the gospel to squatter settlements where he believes the gospel is needed most among the poor.

Pastor Richards Maponde said the gospel must thrive among the poor because Christ came to serve the underprivileged.

The clergyman said he has a heart to see all the underprivileged receiving the good news of the kingdom, adding that he will concentrate his teachings to those that society looks down upon.

A church service in the dusty and smelly squatter settlements of Killarney in Harare, singing and dancing with the homeless is what this clergyman said should occupy the minds of all selfless missionaries.

He cautioned against church leaders who use worshipers to gain popularity and earn money.

The irony of it all is that this church thrives in a squatter settlement next to the leafy Gunhill suburb.

Just a stone throw away from this gathering of the underprivileged, stands the beautiful Borrowdale Race Course with well looked after horses and manicured lawn.

Perhaps after all, in this tale of two cities, this might just be enough testimony that Pastor Maponde truly believes in the 'old time religion.'
