87 is only 8 plus 7: Does age matter

03 Mar 2011 at 10:25hrs | Views
President Robert Mugabe's recent statement that he is not 87 years but 15, is worrying. It's as though he's telling us that he is still a child.
Our President has ruled Zimbabwe for the past 31 years, and he says that he is still going strong, dismissing rumors of his ill health.
"87 is only 8 plus 7. I want to remain with you. My body may get spent, but I wish my mind will always be with you," he told more than 6 000 of his ZANU(PF) supporters in Harare at his 87th birthday celebrations.
Mugabe said his ideas were not those of an "aged person" but those of a young man that "will rejuvenate the country and impel us to be innovative and imaginative".
The old man's statement  showing his  refusal to accept getting  old confirms the lyrics of one of the songs  of the Chimurenga Guru, Thomas Mapfumo's  new Album EXILE, which describes Mugabe as an old bachelor who is still wining and dining with children while avoiding to join people of  its generation.
Mugabe's statement also qualifies his association with the Youth band Born Free Crew which praising him through its songs, urges him to stay in power for ever.
His utterances say a lot about the age difference between him and his wife Grace who is in her 40s.
One has to ask then – does age really matter, or is it just a number?
