The history of the unity between ZAPU and ZANU
21 Dec 2013 at 15:54hrs | Views
The 22 December 1987, will be remembered and celebrated as a day when President Robert Mugabe and Dr. Joshua Nkomo, finally signed a Unity Agreement to unite the people of Zimbabwe under one political party ZANU PF. Therefore, ZANU PF, is a partnership between ZAPU and ZANU though attempts are being made to suggest that ZANU PF is ZANU before the unity.
On 30 October 1976, ZAPU and ZANU, formed the Patriotic Front in Maputo Mozambique led by President Robert Mugabe and Dr. Joshua Nkomo as Co-leaders of the Patriotic Front. Soon after the formation of the Patriotic Front, various committees were created to look into all the aspects of the unity leading to the fusion of the two polical parties into one. The various committees came out with a draft Constitution, and all other committees including the military committee made recommendations.
Therefore, the 22 December is celebrated in two forms as the day when the two parties finally achieved their objective on unity, and 22 December is celebrated for the signing of a peace agreement following disturbances in Mathebeleland and part of the Midlands as a result of the Western conspiracy (a subject of its own).
The fore runers of the December 22/1987 Unity Accord include the Joint Military Command (JMC) being the first unity effort between ZAPU and ZANU since the split of August 1963. The JMC was led by Comrades Jason Moyo and Herbert Chitepo.
The second effort on unity was the formation of the Zimbabwe Peoples Army (ZIPA) in September 1975 in Maputo Mozambique. ZIPA was led by Rogers Mangena and Solomon
Mujuru. Then followed by the Patriotic Front of October 1976.
Therefore December 22/2013, the commissioning of the Dr. Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Airport, the unveilling of the statue, and renaming Main Street as Dr. Joshua Nkomo by His Excellency President Robert Mugabe, must be seen within the context of the unity between the two political parties and the two leaders.
Efforts have been made by some people to undermine the legacy of Dr. Joshua Nkomo, who worked so much for the unity of the people of Zimbabwe.
Even on his death bed, no one including the late Joseph Msika, the late John Nkomo, the late Sikhwili Khohli Moyo and Dumiso Dabengwa who could claim that Umdala u Nkomo said they should pull out of the unity which he entered into with President Mugabe. Instead he emphasised to the President on the unity of the people of Zimbabwe, and also emphazised on the Land Reform Programme.
It is no secret that Umdala uNkomo and President Mugabe were commissioned by God The Almighty to lead the people of Zimbabwe and commit their lives in an armed revolution for the liberation of Zimbabwe. If they were commissioned by God, people must be carefull. Other wise (papara papara uyakufa usuhlanya). Normaly on such cases wait for the leader to pass on his power to you. Remember its a gift from God to realise that you have made a mistake and apologise especially when dealing with older people.
