President Mugabe Should Probe Timber Industry Fiasco

Recent Press reports about serious debts that are haunting one of the most prominent timber companies PG timbers point to the upcoming collapse of the timber industry in Zimbabwe.
Recent comments about the unattended problems in the timber industry have now proven to be true and very important.
The failure by the authorities to interrogate the problems about the state of the timber industry shows that there is a lot being hidden that is benefitting a few criminals most likely without the knowledge of President Robert Mugabe.
The reported 11.3 million PG loss is a very sad development that has been triggered by lack of ministerial and presidential intervention at the early stages of the corruption timber trading disparities.
The failure by the responsible authorities to properly control the harvesting, distribution and marketing of timber in Zimbabwe remains of major concern for the whole nation especially those working in the timber sector who are now under threat of losing jobs due to the stinking corruption in critical sector such as the timber industry.
The President of the republic of Zimbabwe cde Robert Mugabe should cause an investigation into the corruption that is currently enveloping the timber industry where some chief executives of some state owned timber companies have chosen to starve the poor workers and used the hard earned cash to buy luxury cars for some ministers and relatives.
The failure by the authorities to properly regulate the industry has thrown the whole sector into turmoil.
Timber is now being channeled into the informal sector during the night and the Zimbabwe revenue authority is losing thousands if not millions of revenue because of a dirty scam by the Ministry of Environment officials who are working in cahoots with two prominent timber companies in the eastern highlands.
The furniture industry has virtually closed down and a number of timber companies that used to employ thousands of employees are contemplating to file for liquidation and some are selling assets to pay off workers who again being cheated in the process.
Gershem Pasi should find strategies to collect lost revenue from some informal timber merchants that are selling timber under trees hiding behind politics as if belonging to a certain party is a licence to criminal non payment of taxes.
President Robert Mugabe should tackle the timber industry fiasco with immediate effect to curb loss of revenue unless if the informal sector is being protected by the ZIMRA Commissioner General under instruction by the president.
PG is in the red because of an unfair timber trading system being created by some timber industry sharks.
The formal sector that periodically and timeously pays tax to government is currently being forced to compete with the informal sector that does not pay tax or has no capacity to" formally" employ a bigger chunk of the unemployed people in Zimbabwe.
