A tribute to Stewart Chabwinja

Am so shocked and devastated by the news about the passing on of my former colleague and workmate ZimInd Dep Editor Stewart Chabwinja.
Chabwinja was such a fine and astute young journalist with an unsurpassed passion for the trade. I recall with nostalgia the time we spent together at The Outpost, the ZRP Inhouse Publication which moulded a myriad of now seasoned scribes in the likes of Nkosana Dlamini, Mxolisi Ncube and the late Orirando Manwere.
Stewart and myself left The Outpost almost at the same time in 2002 when he joined The Zimbabwe Independent while l went into broadcasting with the Zbctv as a producer.
Knowning the nature of stuff Chabwinja was made of and his zeal for adventure, many of us were justified to believe that the young man was earmarked for greater things in that much more competitive environment.
Indeed, he had a humble beginning there as a sub editor but it was not long before he proved his mettle which saw him rise up the promotional ladder to land the Dep Editor's post, the position he held until His creator called him this Friday night.
Not many scribes have had the guts to write objective critiques as this young man did especially those stories that touched the raw nerves of the rogue Zimbabwean government leadership.
Only recently, his column article caused a wide stir when he unequivocally compared the flamboyant life style of President Robert Mugabe to that of Africa's newboy, John Magufuli of Tanzania.
The death of this young scribe is not a loss to the ZimInd and his family alone but the journalism fraternity as a whole. MHSRIEP.
