- The above question might be challenge. The writer will treat the above question in an unusual manner .The above statement was coined by the writer after closely studying the country prophet "Amos". We all know Amos ,he prophesied during the prosperous days of Israel [Professor Roy].Amos as a prophet have been given different titles, due to his message .Some labeled him as a prophet of doom whereas some as a prophet who believed that Israel destruction was avoidable but conditional. With the above information, one will have picture about the prophet Amos .In order to answer the above question let's try to answer the following fundamental questions
~Who was Amos ?
~What was his message?
~Can it be said that Amos was pregnant of hope and doom?
~Is there any harm if we name Amos as a prophet who was pregnant of
doom and hope?
~If there is No harm What evidence is there that indeed Amos was
pregnant of doom and hope .
- On the ongoing article the writer will justify the validity of the statement.
ANSWERS
- It can be argued that Amos was pregnant of twins .[Note this cannot be taken literally].The twins in the book of Amos are is hope and doom.From the onset Amos had glimpse of hope and doom ,This can be supported by oracles he delivered to the surrounding nations and Israel, Amos 1:3-Amos 2:6.In the same early chapters in Amos 3:12 there is element of hope .This indicate that Amos had two minds towards the day of the lord "hope and doom" ,one will be forced to suggest that Amos was pregnant of hope and doom in his mouth, hence, twins.
- The mid chapters of Amos had both doom and hope .In other words this indicate that according to Amos doom cannot be separated with hope .This is evidenced by Amos 5:2 .The funeral dirge symbolized inevitable destruction. This has been further supported by Dr Constable who submitted that dirge was a song which was sung at friends funeral ,hence, Israel was going to experience the same thing. In the same chapter the reader will notice that Amos changes the mind as he went on to inform the Israelites that in order for you to survive ,you have to seek Yahweh ,Amos 5:4 can justify this ,in other words this prove that Amos delivered hope ,especially to those who were eager of repenting .In this chapter general observation is that there is doom and hope ,hence leading the writer to say that indeed Amos was pregnant of twins in his mouth.
- The last chapters can justify the above claim concerning Amos .The visions of Amos concerning the day of the lord .Amos utter the message of destruction. This can be supported by Amos 7-8.Closely studying will prove that in the same visions of doom .Amos intercede for Israel ,Amos 7:3 [Remember from the past Yahweh had tendency of respecting the intercessors ,check Moses in Numbers 11:3 .Yahweh might have respected the prayers of Amos as well].Therefore ,this indicate that Amos indeed was pregnant of twins in his mouth which were totally different.[Note Amos 9:8-15 can be added as well]
HOWEVER PART
- In as much as it can be said that Amos was pregnant of twins ,it will be loss of sight if the writer ignore the other side of the coin .
- It can be argued that Amos was not pregnant of twins ,as the bible itself doesn't indicate that Amos was either married or pregnant.
- One will be justified to argue that if we are to agree that Amos was pregnant of twins ,it will be injust because doom far outweigh hope ,as such leading one to say that Amos might have been pregnant of only one child the other child might have been added by the later editors since it is claimed that later editors edited the book ,even though some scholars cited by Arthur Marara doubt this [Check the book of Arthur Marara entitled " Old Testament Questions and Answers" ]
