A level Divinity Old Testament Gobbets | 07 July 2016
Qn Deuteronomy 18:22 "when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously, you need not be afraid of him".(6¼)
COMMENT OVERVIEW
- Today the writer will deal with Old Testament Gobbet ,The section of Gobbets cannot be separated with A level Zimsec Divinity syllabus ,hence ,all students should be able to understand or know what is required. I have authored different articles concerning this section .I hope I have educated the Zimbabweans .
- In most occasions I have been only submitting the unanswered gobbets questions, but today I will join you in answering the above gobbet.
ANSWERS
- The context of the gobbet is when Moses explaining to the Israelites the characteristics of a false prophet .This extract is taken from J-SOURCE because of the name of the deity "LORD" is in capitals [you can check one of my article I wrote concerning the sources of Gobbets ].The form of this gobbet is "PROSE" .This reference shows us that already among the Israelites they were now false prophets .
The criteria of distinguishing true and false prophets is explained by Moses .All true prophets were divinely inspired and also this reference can support the view that prophecy originated among the Israelites ,as it was unique .
This reference gives us picture that among the Israelites they were some false prophets who were hijacking the messenger style of speech "Thus says the lord" because the reference says "when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word". This is like the case of Zedekiah ,Shemaih,Hananiah the false prophets.[ 1st Kings 22:11 ,Jeremiah 28:11]
