DIVINITY REVISION QUESTIONS| AUGUST 2016

COMMENT OVERVIEW
 - The above pericope is extracted from the book of Amos ,Amos was the first writing prophet. He prophesied in 8th Century period ,Professor Roy submitted that Amos prophesied during the prosperous days of Israel. In Israel there was lot of activity, this has been supported by Mayes who stated that the archaeologist found shops with two windows for buying and selling .It is prudent to note that during this period injustice was prevailing .Amos as a shepherd, herdsmen and sycamore tree dresser (Amos 7:12),was commissioned to prophesy in Israel during the reign of Jeroboam the second (Amos 7:10).There is a debate among the scholars on what was special about Amos which led him to be the first writing prophet .On the ongoing work the writer seeks to answer the above gobbet.

ANSWER
 - The context of the gobbet is Amos delivering the message of doom to the Israelites because of their daily sins .This occurred when the Israelites violated the Mosaic covenant as they committed injustice by being involved in lucrative trade for instance selling the righteous for silver .The form of the gobbet it's an ORACLE for it is directly coming from a prophet. The pericope of the gobbet is J-SOURCE and D-SOURCE .J -source in the sense that the name of the deity is "LORD" is in capitals whereas D-source in the sense that there is punishment and the fact that it is believed that the book of Amos and 1st Samuel was the work of Deuteronomist historians .The use of the messenger style of speech indicates that Amos was divinely inspired ,probably he was a true prophet [Remember they are also false prophets who hijacked the messenger style of speech ].Amos as a prophet used an oracle as a way of delivering the message to the audience .The phrase "For three transgressions and for four transgressions" indicates that Israel had not only sinned once but for so many times .The pericope will lead one to regard Amos as a social reformer and as a prophet of doom .

N.B There are so many points which can be added.
