Only devolution of power will end Zimbabwe's triple ills
01 May 2017 at 20:26hrs | Views
Zimbabwe joins the world in commemorating the International Workers' Day and in Zimbabwe the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions is holding commemorations under the theme "Fighting Unemployment, Poverty and Inequality."
It is important to note that 37 years after the independence of Zimbabwe, it is now crystal clear that the only sure and definite methodology of fighting all forms of unemployment, poverty and inequality in the country is a devolved system of governance.
The country has been under a centralized system of governance for 37 years and this has only resulted in achieving a record over 80% unemployment rate and a staggering over 85% poverty rate.
Devolution of power will end unemployment by giving provincial and local authorities power and autonomy to use local opportunities, local resources and local competitive advantages to create employment in their localities.
Devolution of Power will end inequality by giving local provinces and authorities the power to determine who benefit from the resources and opportunities available in their localities without central government interference.
Devolution of Power will eradicate poverty by giving provincial and local authorities legislative and fiscal powers to design laws, policies and programmes that ensure the fair distribution of resources and wealth as well as social safety nets for the workers and the vulnerable.
We take this time to urge Zimbabweans once more, from all walks of life and from all forms of work (be it formal and informal) to join us to call for the speedy and immediate implementation of Devolution of Power to ensure that unemployment, poverty and inequality are written off from the face of humanity.
We also remind the Zimbabweans that promises of employment, end of poverty and equality by any political party outside devolution of power are just infatuations that are meant to woe people to vote for those parties in the 2018 elections. In that light we call on those political parties that claim to be pursuing devolution of power to genuinely show by beginning to devolve their structures and their administrative decisions now. Any failure to do that is a clear indication that they are using devolution of power to hoodwink voters in the next elections.
Devolution of Power is the only sure weapon that is capable and able to defeat all forms of unemployment, poverty and inequality.
