1893 takes part in 2017 historical Gukurahundi genocide commemoration

The 22nd December 2017 will go down in the history of Mthwakazi as a turning point where for the first time the gukurahundi genocide commemorations were sanctioned by Zimbabwe's government. The iBhetshu lika Zulu organised event has over the years faced stiff resistance and police intransigence. We will remember the recently planned Bhalagwe memorial event where the police stopped the procession to Bhalagwe, when survivors of the atrocities and those in solidarity were on their way to pay respects.
On December 22 2017 various Mthwakazi organisations gathered at Stanley Square Hall in Bulawayo to pay their respects to those who were mercilessly butchered during the gukurahundi genocide. The 1893MRM would like to applaud Ibhetshu lika Zulu for the sterling job in organizing the event.
The 1893MRM spokesperson at the event was Mr Trevor Mkhwananzi, who serves as the organization's Information and Publicity secretary. Mr Mkhwananzi clearly articulated the foundational values and vision of the 1893 Mthwakazi Restoration Movement. He stated that the 1893MRM is an independent organisation whose core mandate is to restore Mthwakazi in all its facets of life be it socially, economically, psychologically etc, he went on to say that the 1893MRM is a non-political human rights movement which seeks to defend the human rights of Mthwakazi people in every sphere of life.
At the event Mr Mkhwananzi articulated the vision of the movement as follows, "We have seen that as Mthwakazi we have more that binds us together than separates us. We may belong to different organisations, however, our plight is one. As 1893MRM we have therefore placed it upon our shoulders to work towards the unity of Mthwakazi people.
When we approach our cause in our splintered and disparate voices our impact becomes negligible and worthless; therefore as an organisation 1893MRM wants to capitalise on the prevailing spirit of unity throughout the length and breadth of Mthwakazi"
In light of these Gukurahundi commemorations, 1893 Mthwakazi Restoration Movement's position as of to-date is that Zimbabwe' government under Mnangangwa has not yet shown willingness to tackle the Gukurahundi genocide issue with the humility and seriousness it deserves. Simply stating that people must forgive and forget is a far cry from acknowledgement and accountability.
