Irrigation schemes are the answer to climate change
20 Nov 2018 at 13:40hrs | Views
The New Dispensation is forging forward with developmental projects in rural Zimbabwe, forward ever backward never.
At Chinehasha Village in Mashonaland Central plans for a massive irrigation scheme near Ruya Dam are at an advanced stage.
The huge dam that stretches from Chinehasha to Chidewu has been idle for a long time with nothing meaningful taking place.
Now that land suitable for irrigation projects have been identified with a nod and thumbs up from the village heads, people's lives are headed for dizzy heights with proceeds from the proposed irrigation schemes.
Villages like Mukunyadzi, Mashiri, Chirimugaha and Chinehasha stand to benefit big time from the pro-people irrigation projects. Ruya dam is also home to plenty fish making it possible for the establishment of fisheries.
The undeniable climate changes that has seen the rainfall pattern worsening makes it a must for the agricultural ministry to blaze a new trail in irrigation schemes. Scores of youths from Chinehasha and surrounding areas are likely to farm profitably and create wealth for themselves and country.
Horticultural produce can earn forex for the exchequer and also feed the nation. With our good and supportive village heads not even the sky is the limit. I urge the relevant authorities to get things going without procrastinating, Chinehasha Village in Chiweshe will be 'going green' soon.
