Prisca Mpfumira, Douglas Tapfuma, Henrietta Rushwaya, Job Sikhala, Hopewell Chin'ono, Alan Moyo and several others have had to apply for bail from the High Court.
Who is Erasmus Makodza and why did he receive such favorable treatment?
Erasmus Makodza a career cop is the Officer Commanding Matebeleland North Province.
Makodza is no stranger to controversy. January 2018 it was rumoured that Makodza was on a list of top cops who were set to be discharged from duty. The top cops were to leave office in terms of section 22 subsection (3) of the Police Act (Chapter 11;10)
The list of Top cops who were leaving the force had deputy Commissioner General Matibiri was fired along with Commissioner Grace Ndebele (training and human resources), Senior Assistant Commissioners Douglas Nyakutsikwa (Mashonaland East), Eve Mlilo (legal) Wiklef Makamache (finance), Erasmus Makodza (anti-stock-theft), Prudence Chakanyuka (printers) and Justice Chengeta (human resources).
Others who were on the list included Commissioner Olga Bungu (former aide to former First Lady Grace Mugabe), Angeline Guvamombe (Support Unit), Mekia Tanyanyiwa (Support Unit), Godfrey Munyonga (Criminal Investigation Department) and Robert Masukusa (transport).
By some stroke of luck Erasmus Makodza survived. Not only did Makodza survive, he was made commander of the police unit which was responsible for the 2018 elections.
Makodza a popular restaurant and night club owner in Bulawayo enjoyed the backing and support of a cabinet minister.
Makodza divorced his wife Faustina Makodza. During the divorce a lot was revealed about Makodza, his lifestyle and life of luxury on a civil servant's salary.
Faustina Makodza who knew of Makodza's deals demanded 1300 USD as school fees for 3 children and monthly upkeep for the children pegged at $200 each.
How could a civil servant afford this? The question as to his source of funds was raised and swept under the carpet.
Recently it was revealed that Makodza had lost Kazembe's money in a dubious land transaction involving Delatfin Civil Engineering a company owned by Felix Munyaradzi.
A closer look into the transaction revealed that Makodza had been given power of attorney to make purchases for and on behalf of Current Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe.
Kazembe Kazembe owns several properties in Bulawayo bought through the power of attorney given to Erasmus Makodza.
Makodza is alleged to be a full time business associate to Home Affairs Minister and it was the Minister of Home Affairs who ensured that Makodza would not spend more than 24 hours in police custody.
Could it be that Kazembe Kazembe did not want Makodza to spend time in police custody nor did he want public attention on the issue as it could end up exposing him?
Erasmus Makodza was arrested by the Special Anti corruption unit on charges of concealing a transaction to his principal and corruption.
Makodza was granted $10 000 ZWL bail in less than 24 Hours. My opinion is that ZACC and the Special Anti corruption unit need to run a lifestyle audit on both Kazembe Kazembe and Erasmus Makodza and look into their relationship.
