2023 Election campaign kicks off
27 May 2021 at 06:03hrs | Views
Ladies and gentlemen, let me precisely say the die has now been cast and that the 2023 election campaigning season has officially kicked off.
It is unfortunate that only the ruling party Zanu PF has been allowed to kick start the campaigning season by gathering on the day the people were celebrating Africa Day whilst denying their rival MDC-Alliance to do the same citing #Covid19 restrictions.
Thus weaponisation of the law in the country has been the order of the day where laws are applied depending on where one is coming from.
The unveiling of Mbuya Nehanda statue in Harare was attended by only Zanu PF supporters. This has exposed President Emmerson Mnangagwa's lack of leadership qualities where he failed to separate a government function and a party function.
The unveiling of the statue was not even publicised by the mainstream public media to conscientise the nation on the developments leading to the event.
To show that it had nothing to do with the national event ,Zanu PF supporters clad in their usual regalia were the only people gracing the occasion.
The Mbuya Nehanda statue unveiling event was the corner stone or launching pad of a Zanu PF political and electioneering event.
People should not be taken by surprise as this is not new in Zimbabwe, where most national programmes or events have been politicised or in other circumstances hijacked by Zanu PF political big wigs in order to push for their narrative.
When Emmerson Mnangagwa finished unveiling the statue he went on to hand over the fourth batch of Isuzu double cabs to traditional leaders from the country's provinces and to ensure that all 286 chiefs are mobile.
Ironically Minister Naledi Pandor of South Africa donated 450 000 bags of 12,5kg maize meal.
In other words South Africa was telling Zimbabwe government to first prioritise feeding its nation than unveiling of a millon dollar project and buying expensive cars for its chiefs.
This is a wake-up call for the opposition in Zimbabwe to see that the electoral field is not even and that they must fight very hard for electoral reforms. There is now no room for complacency as it stands. Its a do or die encounter.
