On the 6th July 2013, ZAPU Europe will be hosting a commemoration Day For Dr Nkomo's passing on, there would be speeches, deep reflection, celebration and entertainment to remember and celebrate the life of the colossal and the paragon and the leader of the Zimbabwean liberation struggle.
Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo was born on the 19th June 1917 and passed on the 1st July 1999. Nkomo was the leader and founder of the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU).
He was a trade-union leader, who became president of the banned National Democratic Party, and was jailed for ten years by Rhodesia's white minority government. When the Rhodesian government showed its recalcitrant and obduracy in negotiating a peaceful political settlement, Dr Joshua Nkomo decided to wage a military struggle against the white minority government. He became the Chief Commander of the ZIPRA forces, an army which started as a humble and poorly armed to one of the strongest and most sophisticated armies on the African continent. ZIPRA single handedly defeated the Rhodesia government.
Nkomo had many nicknames, including "Father Zimbabwe" and "Chibwechitedza" (the slippery rock).
All Zimbabweans are invited to this event of a life time, the invite is also extended to all friends of ZAPU and to those who respected and loved Dr Joshua Nkomo, the Zimbabwean President Zimbabwe never had.
