MDC Statement on the Constitutional Court Ruling

The MDC has been advised that the Constitutional Court has dismissed the application for postponement of the elections from 31 July 2013 to a latter date.

The main reason why the MDC was seeking an extension was to allow Zimbabweans to be allowed more time to register as voters as well as to make sure that reforms which would have a bearing on the freeness and fairness of the election were done.

The MDC is committed to free and fair elections and does not agree with the Constitutional Court decision the effect of which was to subordinate key constitutional provisions to a date instead of subordinating the date to key constitutional provisions.

The MDC leadership will study the reasons of the judgement when they are made available before making a decision about same.
