Mugabe's comments show that he has become an embarrassment to himself

24 Jul 2013 at 11:00hrs | Views
The comments made by Robert Mugabe about Zimbabweans in the diaspora should leave anyone who was forced to leave the country due to his misrule thoroughly livid.

However, one should also keep in mind the man's age, the attendant effects of such age on his sense of context and the appropriateness or lack thereof of the comments he continues to make. It is also important to remember that the man does not have a plan to extricate the country from the mess he created and also the fact the he is essentially running against his record.  In short he reduces his campaign rallies to history lessons and platforms to insult anything that moves because that is all he can talk about.

It is no wonder that ZANU PF railroaded the country into an early election; they were very aware and afraid of the negative effects the continued exposure of their candidate to the public would have. Now their worst nightmare has come to pass.

If anything we should feel embarrassed by the comments he made.

Robert Mugabe questions why people left Zimbabwe and suggests that people left Zimbabwe for no other reason other than that so they could see England. Only for that, nothing else? He even has the temerity to question the sizes of houses in England telling his expectant listeners that the houses are very small over there in England. Lastly he throws down a challenge and asks what Zimbabweans have achieved during their time outside the country, since most people who come back to Zimbabwe to die and have to have coffins procured for them back in the country.

We can safely tell you Robert that the houses in Johannesburg are very commodious, that is why four of us choose to live in one room. Somehow the landlord never seems to appreciate why Zimbabweans are so tight and families live together in a single room divided by a curtain. We had never of thought of it that we shouldn't be doing something like that.

We will leave our personal achievements or lack of them for others to judge. Most of us are not yet 90 years old and we are looking forward to you accepting defeat in the election so that we can start working for our nation. We believe that under the leadership of Morgan Richard Tsvangirai we can make up for some of the lost time. At least he won't send the army to hound us out of our homes and insult us after that.

How can a man who caused almost a quarter of the population of his country to leave and look for better opportunities elsewhere ask why they left? What cheek is that?

It has become clear to all and sundry that Robert Mugabe is not a man to take Zimbabwe into the future. His future lies in the past.

We continue to encourage all Zimbabweans in South Africa to make the journey to Zimbabwe and consign this uncaring and contemptuous man and his party to the dustbin of history.
