Railway rehabilitation a positive move by Government

Railway transport plays a significant role in the transport system of Zimbabwe, mainly because the development of trade, industry and commerce of a country largely depends on the growth of railways.

Railway is the backbone of the Zimbabwean transport system since it is linked to all economic sectors such as mining and agriculture.

However, in some areas of the country, the rails are worn out, while sleepers and ballasts are in a terrible state that needs replacement. Further to that, the signal systems are not functioning due to vandalism and theft.

Government is making concerted efforts to improve the railway network, a positive move that should be applauded by individuals, business community and the entire nation.

Railway transport should be accessible so as to facilitate long distance travelling and transportation of bulky goods that cannot be easily ferried by road. When compared to other means of transport, railway transportation costs are relatively far much cheaper. It is worth noting that the rehabilitation of the railway system will develop the industrialization process of the country since raw materials will be transported at a cheaper rate.

While addressing attendees at an official opening of the International Federation of Freight Associations for the Region Africa Middle East (RAME) in Victoria Falls, Vice President Joice Mujuru reiterated Government's commitment to improving the railway network by rehabilitating 400 kilometers of railway track with a view to facilitate the movement of heavy goods and raw materials in and out of the country. This will also relieve current pressure on the road network.

"Goods that would otherwise be transported more conveniently by rail are being moved long distances by road. In the case of Zimbabwe, most road transporters are foreign owned implying that there is a net outflow of capital on this account, while the local transport sub sector, notably rail transport operates below capacity," she said.

At the same meeting, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Dr Obert Mpofu, articulated the need for a viable transport infrastructure as it attracts investment and accessibility to regional and international markets.

"An efficient transport system contributes enormously towards reduced business costs, hence its importance towards increased trade competitiveness and trade capacity. This is particularly the case with Zimbabwe given its geographic centrality in Southern Africa where it is a major conduit to some important economic corridors," he said.

Rail transport has proven to be much safer as compared to other modes of transport like road transport that are more prone to accidents and breakdown.
