The President of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe never had remembered

04 Jul 2014 at 09:14hrs | Views

Last year 2013 ZAPU-Europe organised its very first commemorative event in the UK for the late Dr Joshua Nkomo, who was viewed as the leading light in nationalist politics. The event was organised under the auspices of the Arts and Culture Portfolio, the Secretary responsible for the Portfolio is Ms Nokutula (Nokuthula) Ncube, who when asked why ZAPU found it necessary to organise the event in the UK she said, "we have been inundated by requests from our members and other people as to whether we had forgotten about the immense contributions made by Dr Nkomo in the upliftment of all?"

Ms Ncube went on to explain about the contributions which Dr Nkomo made during the liberation struggle and after the struggle, she said that if it was not for NKomo's political maturity, unparalleled leadership and foresight Zimbabwe could have been easily plunged into unnecessary civil war which the other party was clearly drawing him to. He refused to be sucked into a useless war.

Many social and political analysts and even activists view Dr Nkomo in the same vein as Mr Nelson Mandela; many believe that if Nkomo had won the elections in 1980 Zimbabwe would be a different and prosperous country today. That Zimbabwe would never have experienced genocide, such as the one which happened in 1980s. Nkomo is widely respected for his capacity to organise, strategise and for his ability to transcend tribal bigotry as currently epitomised by the Zimbabwean rulers whose politics in narrowly and solely based on tribal lines. Nkomo refused to be reduced to a tribal leader as the other party wanted him to be.

When Ms Nokuthula Ncube was speaking of this year's event, she said "Oka Nyongolo was a man of the people; therefore all Zimbabweans irrespective of political affiliation and colour are invited to this event of a life time. The invite is also extended to all friends of ZAPU and those who respected and loved Dr Joshua Nkomo, the Zimbabwean President, Zimbabwe never had".

"There will be lots of entertainment in the form of short speeches, traditional dances etc. As for food and drinks, plenty will be served and as for the dress theme;  feel free to wear whatever you want, but if you happen to have any attire that will remind us of oka Nyongolo please do so in order to make our day even more exciting and memorable. Most importantly, bring your dancing shoes. This is a day where you have to let go and dance like no one is watching".

Ms Ncube said that one of the highlights for the last year's event was the mesmeric speech by Mr Tishabona Malaba Ncube, whom many people have been asking ZAPU to bring him back for this year's event. Ms Ncube is keeping her cards close to her, she stated that guest speakers will be announced nearer the time, but people should expect the same level of quality exhibited last year.

Mr Thabiso Mabhena ZAPU-Europe's Secretary for Administration also reported that he has informed The Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo National Foundation about this year's event.

The ZAPU's national Secretary for Information Mr Mjobisa Noko ecstatically commended ZAPU Europe for organising such an important event and wished that the event will be a success.

Nkomo is alive today due to his works, his legacy is still binding the people together, it is befitting for ZAPU organising such a non-political event in order to accommodate everybody. "This year we are expecting more people, preparations started early and we have already had a large number of people confirming that they will be attending this year's event in humble honour of one of Africa's most illustrious sons" Concluded Ms Ncube.
