Harare City Council act on kombis now!

15 Jul 2014 at 09:13hrs | Views

The high level of anarchy and chaos caused by commuter omnibuses in Harare City the capital is regrettable. This sector contributes immensely in propping up the needs of society, but their existence is a nuisance which needs stern corrective action now.

Surely the combi drivers and their conductors know no law, and respect no laws at all. They break all road rules with impunity. They load anywhere, and drop-off anywhere. They block roads all day long especially Chinhoyi Street, Speke, Albion, Angwa and Robert Mugabe ways while City Council authorities watch from the terraces as if it's a soccer match.

These rowdy combi crews inundate ordinary motorists as they block streets willy-nilly. They are ever shouting for clients as well as obstructing pedestrians who are on their shopping sprees. For how long shall we stay under such frustrating conditions? Where are the law enforcement authorities who are supposed to rescue the troubled public?

We are fed up of reading about deaths caused by negligent combi drivers who run-down innocent pedestrians while running away from police or people trapped between two motor vehicles while trying to find their way in the course of their private business.

We demand an immediate restoration of order now. We also urge the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development to phase-out this nuisance so that they bring in the big buses which they are promising to end this troublesome state of affairs.

Does it mean that Harare City Council has no power and ability to deal with this problem expeditiously? This is taking away the sparkle and glitter of our once shining capital city. The city is almost reduced to a shanty town with vendors littering all our streets again.

City Council should consult all stakeholders on how best we can realign the escalating situation in our city now.
