SW Radio Africa collapsed because of MDC-T, says founder Jackson

Jerry Jackson, founder/ manager, of S W Radio Africa blames MDC "disarray" for the closure of her radio station.

Ms Jackson "told the BBC that the "massive disarray" in the opposition MDC, had contributed to "donor fatigue" while moves by the European Union to re-engage Mugabe had not helped," according to a New Zimbabwe report.

There is no doubt that the relative ease with which Mugabe was able to rig the July 2013 elections was a turning point for SADC and the International community's support of Zimbabwe's struggle for democracy. They were so disappointed they simply lost interest and for good reason.

For all its shortcomings including the fact that Mugabe controlled all the key ministries, the fact still remains that the GNU offer the nation its best get-out-of-jail card to end the Zanu PF dictatorship. To achieve this all the opposition MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai had to do was implement the democratic reforms agreed in the GPA and guaranteed by SADC.

MDC had the majority in parliament and five years in which to implement the reforms and yet they failed to get even one reform implemented. Not one! SADC and the international community literally begged MDC not to take part in the elections without the reforms, as one MDC MP has since admitted, and MDC paid no heed.

It was not just MDC to blame for this national fiasco but all Zimbabweans; whilst outsider had repeatedly commented on the lack of progress in implementing the reforms Zimbabweans themselves continued to be blissfully aware or cared.

So the bottom line is Zimbabwe lost its best chance to bring about meaningful democratic change is such a callous way outsiders were compelled to conclude that we really did want democratic change or, at best, we were not yet ready for it. Either way no outsiders were willing to waste their time and money supporting any Zimbabwean democracy projects.

S W Radio Africa is one of the Zimbabwean organisations promoting democracy that has suffered from donor "fatigue" as Jerry Jackson called it. MDC itself has too suffered as most donors have deserted the party; the party has been begging for money without much success.

From now on Zimbabweans will have to demonstrate that they understand what democracy is and what democratic changes they want to see implemented, none of the wishy-washy MDC ideas and incompetent leaders who do not even know the meaning of democracy masquerading as champions of democratic change, before any outsiders will pay an attention much less fund them! It is good; we will be assured of quality for a change!
