Ruwe, turning Zambia into a nation of praying mantis will not guarantee a competent new president!

25 Nov 2014 at 19:19hrs | Views
Field Ruwe has been arguing his fellow country men and women to pray for God's guidance as Zambians go to the poll to elect new president to replace the late President Sata.

"God works in mysterious ways," evoked Field Ruwe at the start of his article.

"Between now and January 20, 2015, God will keep talking to us because He loves us relentlessly and has ordained us to succeed. He wants us to figure out how to run a successful government. He wants us to rid of tribalism and live as one people like other successful people."

Actually there is no mystery at all in the economic success of western countries like USA, Canada, etc.; they have competent leaders because the electorate choose competent leaders and reject the incompetent ones. In Zambia as in Zimbabwe and many other African countries we specialise in electing tyrants and incompetent village idiots like Mugabe and Tsvangirai respectively.

Instead of paying attention on what the electorate need to look for to pick quality leaders we have sort solace in the Bible and asking God to "tell" who to vote for. Of course, the rife-rough have followed the voters to church and never tire of telling us they are the one anointed by God to led!

When Mugabe was campaigning for last year's elections, he was not contend to just talk to church members he dressed like a member of VaPostori at one point. That did not stop him rigging the elections and thus behave worse than the common thief but rather the devil incarnate!

VP Mujuru is one of Zimbabwe's most corrupt leaders and yet during elections, she is either wearing her Zanu PF garb with Mugabe's portrait or else her Salvation Army Church uniform. She is a billionaire but that did not stop her using her position as Church Elder helping herself to donated funds and then persecuting those who dared to condemn the corruption. And still she will rattle out quotations from Genesis to Revelation better than many a Rabbi.

Ruwe's article is full of the religious platitudes that will not help the people of Zambia distinguish the competent and honest leaders from the rife-rough of Dr Jekyll by day and Mr Hyde by night.

As long as the electorate do not have a clue what is economically deliverable, for example, as contrast to the pie in the sky promises the voters will always fall for the cunning Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde!

It is not by turning Zambia into a nation of the praying mantis that Zambians can hope to finally escape the trap of corruption and poverty that they, Zimbabweans and many other Africans have fallen into after independence. Instead, they should be putting their God given brains to productive use and figure out what makes a good leader for themselves. It requires a bit of effort but it is not rocket science!!
