When the rebels reunite

03 Dec 2014 at 09:38hrs | Views

I could not help but laugh my lungs out when I read in some sections of the media that there is yet another new child born in the MDC family dubbed United Movement for Democratic Change (UMDC) / Democratic Change (UD) which saw the reunion of the former MDC-T secretary general Tendai Biti, Sekai Holland and the renewal team with the MDC-N leader Welshman Ncube.

Truth being that, these fellows falls out of the leadership of Morgan Tsvangirai blaming him of abusing party funds. I really wonder how these radicals and their followers will work. In fact, all of the MDC break away factions are just desperately clutching at straws for their survival in politics.

Honestly, what makes Biti, Ncube and madam Holland so sure that by coming together they will produce something different from their repeated individual personal failures? They all claim that Tsvangirai was unwilling to share party power with them and have yet failed to maneuver the party to the greater heights that they imagined since the MDC formation in 1999.

But then, what surprises me is that are these MDC rebels really fighting for democracy in the party or it is just a matter of crying for positions and finding other better ways for looking for party funds for their continued existence in the political arena.

After Ncube fall out of Tsvangirai's MDC in 2005, we have heard nothing politically tangible from him and his followers. We thought that a strong opposition party had risen through this man, but the 2013 election results tell it all. I foresee disaster in this re-union of rebels.

I giggled again when I read in press that Biti apologized to Ncube for calling him sellout after he split from the main MDC. It will not be a surprise that by the time of going to their congress which is alleged to be scheduled for mid next year there will be another splinter group in this United Democratic Party as internal squabbles in this opposition party are nothing but order of the day. Who then will lead who? I wonder.

Again, Sekai Holland is said to lead the party together with Ncube. At one point, Holland was said to be one of the elders who were fighting for the reunion of Tsvangirai's MDC and the renewal team. This alone tells it all that this Democratic Union party is formed by a group of people who are only after money and nothing else. Will there be able to lead this nation? I really wonder.

Also, it is sad to note that when the members of the Democratic Union were still in the MDC-T they could feel how their leader struggled to find financial resources for their operations and campaigns. The same might as well happen in this small joint political party. Western donors who had been sponsoring the opposition parties with financial resources withdrew their services as they noticed that nothing productive came from them.
