EDITOR,
It is noble that Zimbabwe and the European Union are re-engaging in an effort to break the one-and-a-half decade long deadlock.
The EU imposed illegal sanctions at the instigation of the opposition MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai.
Tsvangirai believed that sanctions would accelerate his chances of forming a new government.
This matched the West's desire for regime change in the country. Unfortunately, Tsvangirai failed to derive any meaningful benefit from this ill-timed strategy.
However, the illegal sanctions plunged the country into economic turmoil which have caused suffering on the ordinary citizens.
Having realised the source of their problems, citizens as voters chose to wave the red card to the man who spearheaded their problems, Tsvangirai.
Since then, Tsvangirai has never won any poll, from the time he stood as a candidate for Buhera North in 2000 up to his candidature as a presidential aspirant.
Since 2000, the West has been awaiting anxiously, pouring cash into MDC activities hoping that one day it would form the next government in this country.
Each day which passed, the West's hopes have been receding creating a barrier between them and Tsvangirai who demonstrated an amazing lack of political prowess. He failed to craft policies which could rival Zanu-PF'S ways of doing things. He has failed to keep his party intact owing to lack of adequate leadership qualities as the founding president.
That fragmented the MDC into numerous small entities which do not have impact on the political landscape. Upon realising this political matrix in the opposition parties, the EU decided to re-engage Zanu-PF so as to do business.
The EU had no option, but to swallow its pride, dump the MDC and open dialogue with Zanu-PF after over a decade of consorting with the MDC'S and its misleading information about conditions in Zimbabwe.
This explains why all funders and donors for the MDC took a flight when they discovered that funding MDC was not the right way to serve their interests in Zimbabwe.
We wish all the best for Zimbabwe-EU re-engagement effort. It is everyone's hope that they succeed as this is the only way to go as opposed to imposition of sanctions which affect ordinary citizens.
An appeal is also extended to the MDC to start working together with Zanu-PF for the good of the nation as opposed to selfish personal desires.
United we stand, divided we fall!
