MDC-T condemns exam fees hike

29 May 2015 at 16:11hrs | Views
The MDC-T strenuously condemns the decision by the crumbling and bankrupt Zanu-PF regime to increase examination fees for Form 4 pupils and the introduction of examination fees for Grade 7 pupils.

The renegade Zanu-PF regime has decided to come with a new examination fee structure whereby Grade 7 pupils are expected to pay $3 per subject while "O" Level students will have to pay $15 per subject. This insensitive decision is not only shocking and completely bizarre but  blatantly inconsiderate and extremely arrogant.

The fact that the beleaguered, faction - ridden and failed Zanu-PF regime chooses to hike examination fees at a time when most families are struggling to even put food on their tables is a callous and unmitigated attack on the fundamental right to education and is, therefore, tantamount to a gross violation of a key constitutional provision. It is a wanton and crude attack on the Bill of Rights enshrined in the new Constitution of Zimbabwe.

This unwarranted move comes at a time when millions of school children both at primary and secondary level are dropping out of school as a result of the economic meltdown that has been  brought about by the Zanu-PF regime's rampant corruption,ineptitude,thievery and general misgovernance.

The move by the collapsing and bankrupt Zanu-PF regime is clear testimony of the level of desperation that is now afflicting this illegitimate administration. It is completely unacceptable for the failed regime to attempt to shore up its bankruptcy and waning fortunes through such an obscene move aimed at extorting money from the already over - taxed and poverty - stricken people of Zimbabwe.

The MDC-T will not stand by and watch as this rabid regime trembles upon the future of thousands of young Zimbabweans. We call upon the people of Zimbabwe to roundly condemn and resist the regime's criminal and insensitive decision of perpetuating the suffering of the majority of the people.

The MDC-T shall pursue all democratic, political and legal avenues available to stop such a callous and illegal move by the disintegrating Zanu-PF regime. The MDC-T maintains that a sound, progressive and affordable education is a prerequisite for social stability and sustainable economic growth in Zimbabwe.

As the government in waiting, the MDC-T affirms the importance of a well balanced education for all Zimbabweans as a basic human right that is enshrined in the new constitution, which states that "every citizen and permanent resident of Zimbabwe has the right to;

a) A basic state funded education, including adult basic education and;

b) Further education, which the state, through reasonable legislative and other measures, must make progressively available and accessible".
