Stop misleading Zimbabweans about President Mugabe
11 Jun 2015 at 15:06hrs | Views
The editorial comment for the Dailynews of June 9, 2015 headlined 'Time for Mugabe to rest' is a typical example of yellow journalism which subscribes to sensationalism as its life-line of survival. What has the president done wrongly to warrant a suggestion by this paper for the president to relinquish power?
The Dailynews is guilty of lying by omission. They accuse President Robert Mugabe of all the economic problems bedeviling the country without looking at the matter objectively that the western backed economic sanctions have caused havoc to our well-being as a nation. Otherwise the president is working flat-out to keep Zimbabwe afloat in the face of spanners thrown into his work by the nation's adversaries.
The impetus of sanctions is hinged on illegal regime change agenda by our erstwhile enemies. President Mugabe remains the people's darling in Zimbabwe in spite of the insatiable desire to unduly discredit him. This explains why he garnered 63% of the latest presidential polls held on July 31, 2013. He is not only popular at home, but across the continent as he is a crowned SADC and AU Chairperson.
If he was that bad as claimed by the Dailynews, how come he is heaped with all these international responsibilities? It's because Africa cannot afford to ignore his services as a seasoned statesman whose track record of diplomacy on international affairs is respected by rational beings.
If we are all patriotic Zimbabweans, we should join hands and castigate the West for the removal of all traces of sanctions so that we restore our glory as a nation. It is high time that we dissociate ourselves with trivialities of bickering over non-progressive issues so that we look forward and find solutions which prop us together as a society. Every Zimbabwean has a critical responsibility as a bonafide citizen of this country to ensure that we work towards building Zimbabwe as opposed to the contrary which stifles development.
The media should play a pivotal role of developing society rather than causing unnecessary alarm, despondence and trivialization of our national values to the extent of throwing them to the dust-bins.
Dailynews is urged to review itself so that it can re-pick the ethical code of conduct expected of professional journalists that are focused on developing the nation rather than destroy it. Or else it should conduct a skills audit of its ill-trained reporters that are busy spewing venom where solutions are urgently needed to ascertain continuity of the nation state where they are also indispensible citizens.
It is an indisputable fact that President Mugabe is a constitutionally and democratically elected leader. In that respect, no-one can campaign for his down-stepping as that will be a real coup d'état and a treasonous matter against the wishes of the people.
