What's the fuss about a nap

11 Jun 2015 at 15:10hrs | Views
What is it in the Zimbabwean President for people to expend unnecessary time scrutinising every move he takes including taking a nap at the inauguration of our new president, Muhammadu Bukari. I was at the ceremony and I can authoritatively tell you that quite a number of heads of state had forty winks here and there on this particular hot day.

It came as a surprise to me that a national newspaper found it newsworthy to give an acre of space on Mugabe's slumber when other issues of national importance are crying for such misused space. The Daily News chose to ignore important issues and found it befitting to reproduce pictures and other nonsense that were circulated on the net by the rabid Sahara Reporters who have their own agenda.

He slept at the ceremony, then what. What addition does that add to the people of that country (Zimbabwe)? What is wrong with some of you Zimbabweans? You behave like a proverbial fool who throws salt on the body of his father that is being ravaged by a predator. This does not happen in countries like America where they can differ on political issues but not on issues of national interest and patriotism. They fight together like leopards to defend their country.

I understand the Zimbabwean Daily News is a product of Mugabe's indigenisation policies. The Daily News proprietors must be the most thankful people because they were accorded that rare opportunity. It has remained a pipe dream in other countries for blacks to enter into the media industry. This is not to mean that they must zip their mouths and condone commission of vice because they were accorded that opportunity.

They must simply perform their fourth estate mandate responsibly. I have read the Daily News several times and most of the stories on Mugabe are scathing. We have not heard of a journalist being arrested for attacking the president in Zimbabwe. That goes to tell a story of a man who is a real democrat. Please Zimbabwean journalists, you must treasure the media freedom you enjoy in Zimbabwe. In some countries, journalists are arrested, and to some extent killed for simply writing negatively about the head of state and government.
