A record of more than forty thousand mourners who thronged the National Heroes Acre on Saturday 20 August 2011 to bid farewell to the Retired General Solomon Tapfumaneyi Mujuru was a vivid sign which showed that the General was a man of the people.

General Mujuru who was declared the national hero by the ZANU PF highest decision making board, the Politburo was just a formality as even before that declaration, every Zimbabwean, young and old had already declared that the National Heroes Acre was built for such people like the late General Mujuru.

The decision to declare General Mujuru was a mere formality given the illustrious path that the General followed since his early years as a school boy until the days he became the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces just after independence. His hard work, culminated in the integration of Zanla, Zipra and Rhodesian Forces into a single unit of the Zimbabwe National Army.

The late General Mujuru was the man of the people. People of his stature commit themselves to serving the people. Such was General Mujuru's character as shown by his desire to stop his schooling days at an early age in order to dedicate his life to free the then oppressed people of Zimbabwe.

It was a befitting send off for the Commander of commanders, General Mujuru as the multitudes of people thronged the National Heroes Acre to accompany him to his final destination.

As everyone scrambled for seats at the National Heroes Acre, grief and emotions were written on people's faces as they were moved by the eulogies for the illustrious son of the soil.

Zimbabwean people and those who worked with General Mujuru during and after the armed struggle which brought our independence in 1980, had no doubt that, in him we have lost a true revolutionary and a war strategist par excellence, a farmer and businessman of good repute.

His legacy must be carried on and emulated by all Zimbabweans. His exploits should be penned down to inspire young Zimbabweans.

General Mujuru, a commander of commanders and courageous fighter will be greatly missed by many people who interacted with him in military, politics, business and social life. He was a man of good repute and of few words but full of immeasurable wisdom for all Zimbabweans.

The nation take solace in that his death revealed that he was indeed a true revolutionary as his death occurred on the month of August, the month which Zimbabweans remember and observe the works of the fallen heroes of the armed struggle. It is the month, which we celebrate and cherish the rich legacy of our national heroes and General Mujuru is among them.

To appease the spirits of our heroes who dedicated their lives to emancipation of the people, the economic empowerment of the indigenous people must be finalized. People must be economically empowered so that foreign donors find it difficult to psychologically colonize Zimbabwean people through their thirty pieces of silver.

General Mujuru, the living and those who departed before him sacrificed their time and lives so that we as Zimbabweans would live comfortably in our mother country and also share equitably the national resources of this beautiful country.

As we mourn General Mujuru we will continue to cherish the great works of this great man, and be inspired by it.
